Cell Phone Chipmaker To Cut 115 Jobs

Analog chipmaker, National Semiconductor Corp., will cut nearly a quarter of its Arlington, Texas, facility’s work force.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — National Semiconductor Corp. will cut 115 jobs at its Arlington manufacturing plant, about one-fourth of the facility's workers.

The plant employs 469 people to make analog chips used in cell phones.

The Arlington reductions are part of 200 job cuts nationwide that the California-based company announced on Monday. Officials said they are eliminating the use of older technology.

Recently, analysts have given a more cautious outlook for the semiconductor industry because of concern over higher inventories and the possibility of slower demand.

This month, Banc of America Securities downgraded the stock of National Semiconductor, industry leader Intel Corp., Dallas-based Texas Instruments Inc. and several other chipmakers.
