Pneumatic, hydraulic and electric actuators are critical moving components in equipment used for processing and packaging food and beverage products. Actuators used in the food and beverage industry must be manufactured from appropriate materials and designed in a way that eliminates collection points where bacteria can flourish. Suitable actuators must also be capable of withstanding frequent washdowns from a variety of sanitary cleaning solutions. This paper examines how actuator design and assembly meet these challenging requirements so that process and automation engineers can select the most appropriate actuators for their food and beverage applications.
