The Very Light Car, built by the fledgling company Edison2, has recently been announced as the winner of the mainstream class in the Progressive Automotive X Prize, a $10 million competition to build production-ready cars that get more than 100 mpg.
The car's construction is based on a simple principle: being as light weight as possible. While this does create a few issues — safety in a crash against a 6,000-pound Ford Expedition, for example — the team is confident they will be able to overcome these nagging issues before the car goes into production some five years from now. Perhaps the quick handling will allow drivers to avoid accidents altogether?
