Anyone who spends time in Cleveland during the winter — or anywhere in the northern half of the country — is well aware of the copious amounts of salt used to keep roads free of ice. But little do most know that Cargill operates a massive salt mine directly underneath Cleveland, with 100 miles of roads and tunnels. They produce 3 million tons of salt every year, which is enough to fill 600 trucks every day in the winter.
According to Lori Roman, President of the Salt Institute, companies like Cargill could mine at this rate for the next 1,000 years and still not run out. Sounds a little ”wishful thinking,“ but it’s good news for our roads.
