Columns for Retention of Highly Polar Compounds

Thermo Fisher's Hypersil™ GOLD HILIC column range performs hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography.

Thermo Hypersil GOLDThermo Fisher Scientific recently launched its Hypersil™ GOLD HILIC column range because hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) is becoming an increasingly popular technique to offer complementary selectivity to reversed phase. HILIC works by incorporating water in the highly organic mobile phase to form an adsorbed water-rich layer on the polar stationary phase surface into which analyte molecules partition. Retention is governed by dipole-dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding mechanisms. The Hypersil GOLD moreover provides:

  • The ability to retain highly polar and hydrophilic compounds.
  • The capacity to aid in the analysis of compounds that are traditionally difficult to retain using conventional C18 columns.
  • Availability with 1.9-, 3- and 5-µm particle sizes.
  • Suitability for applications within drug discovery, food testing, environmental analysis and electrospray mass spectroscopy.
