Green Balancing Act

The Soap and Detergent Association has come out in support of the Responsible Renewable Energy Tax Credit Act of 2007, legislation that would eliminate the biofuel tax credit for co-produced renewable diesel. The legislation is viewed as a critical step in restoring the balance between biofuel production and other green industries such as the domestic oleochemical industry. The association says the unintended consequences of biofuel subsidies for co-production renewable diesel, direct burning, and ethanol production have driven up the cost of tallow more than 80 percent since the last quarter of 2006 and are threatening the continued existence of the oleochemical industry in the U.S.
