MSA Launches First ‘Green’ Hard Hat

MSA has announced today the release of its “green” protective hard hat, which is manufactured from sugarcane. The V-Gard GREEN hat uses a high-density polyethylene sourced entirely from sugarcane ethanol in Brazil. These new hard hats meet all the company’s own performance standards, as well as those defined by ANSI Z89.1 and CSA Z94.1.

Pittsburgh (Manufacturing.net) — MSA has announced today the release of its “green” protective hard hat, which is manufactured from sugarcane. The V-Gard GREEN hat uses a high-density polyethylene sourced entirely from sugarcane ethanol in Brazil. These new hard hats meet all the company’s own performance standards, as well as those defined by ANSI Z89.1 and CSA Z94.1.

“By developing a hard hat sourced from sugar, we are effectively reducing the overall carbon footprint associated with the life-cycle of this product,” said Eric Beck, MSA’s Global Director of Strategic Marketing.

The sugarcane-based HDPE is 100 percent recyclable in the same stream as conventional HDPE, which makes the hats suitable for reuse in non-safety products. They will be marked with a recycling label to help remind users that they can recycle the helmet at the end of its use cycle.

MSA will manufacture its V-Gard Green hard hat at its Murrysville, Pa., facility, which is located near Pittsburgh.
