ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A new $25 million program led by the University of Michigan seeks to help boost nuclear monitoring and detection efforts around the world.
The Ann Arbor school says the funding for the Consortium for Monitoring, Technology and Verification is from the National Nuclear Security Administration.
The school says it involves 14 universities and 13 national laboratories in efforts including advancing technologies to identify bomb-making nuclear materials; finding secret nuclear weapons facilities; and detecting nuclear detonations. At least 200 students are expected to be part of the work.
Sara Pozzi is the program's director and a University of Michigan professor. She says there's an urgent need to train young people in such fields. She notes the funding in part will help support student fellowships, internships and travel connected to that work.
