CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Education Department says digital items that were going into state surplus are instead being rebuilt, refurbished and placed in schools and libraries across the state.

It's part of an initiative called SecondLaunchWV. The state says private organizations such as Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Mountaineer Gas and the West Virginia Air National Guard have also recently donated equipment for the program.

Unused equipment is donated to the Education Department, which says it refurbishes the items for school use. Computers, monitors, keyboards and mice are then provided to schools free of charge. The Education Department's news release said it is also providing equipment to the state's 118 public libraries.

The release says the 3-year-old program has placed more than 14,000 items in 47 counties, a value of more than $5 million.
