NAGOYA, Nov. 12 (Kyodo) — Toyota Motor Corp. unveiled on Monday advanced safety technology to help avoid a crash in the event of pedal misapplication in a parking lot.

The safety system sounds an alarm when it detects obstacles by using sonar introduced on the vehicle's body. When judged that a driver is not aware of collision risk, it automatically applies the brakes or turns down the engine output to avert accidents, according to Toyota.

The automaker said it plans to sell new models of passenger cars equipped with the new technology in the near future.

According to Toyota's research, roughly 7,000 car crashes a year due to pedal misapplication occur in Japan.
