CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Specialty glass maker Corning Inc. is looking at expanding a North Carolina plant and adding 70 full-time jobs.
The Concord-Kannapolis Independent Tribune reports that Cabarrus County commissioners plan a public hearing next Monday on whether to offer a tax break in return for the company's $50 million investment.
The deal would give Corning an 85 percent discount for three years on its total property taxes of nearly $1 million on the expansion at its plant in Midway.
The Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation says the proposed jobs would pay between $16 and $20 per hour.
Corning got state and local incentives before it opened the Midland plant in 1999 to produce optical fibers. Production was stopped in 2002 when the fiber-optic cable market collapsed. It was reopened five years later.
