FORD CITY, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public hearing May 30 to detail the steps the agency has taken to clean up liquid mercury found at a former industrial plant site in western Pennsylvania.
The mercury was found in February, spattered on a concrete pad next to a popular walking trail in Ford City, about 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The site once housed a PPG Industries plant and later one owned by Ford City Equipment.
But DEP spokesman John Poister tells The Associated Press the mercury wasn't residual pollution but may have come from electrical equipment that was broken open as the plant was demolished.
The public hearing will detail steps taken to clean up the mercury and possible future cleanup at the site. Poister says current ownership of the site it unclear.
