NEW YORK (AP) -- A Washington lawyer and former inspector general for the Justice Department has been appointed as external compliance monitor to review Apple Inc.'s antitrust and training policies.
Michael R. Bromwich, managing principal of The Bromwich Group — a crisis management and strategic advisory services firm — was named Wednesday by Judge Denise Cote.
Bromwich was a federal prosecutor in Manhattan in the 1980s and has recently served as the country's top offshore drilling regulator.
Cote called Bromwich "well qualified" for the task, a result of remedial measures ordered after Cote concluded that Apple disobeyed antitrust laws by trying to raise electronic book prices in 2010.
Apple is appealing the finding, saying it never conspired to fix prices.
Bromwich said in a statement that he was "deeply honored" to serve as monitor.
