1st Tires Roll Out At Continental Tire's S.C. Plant

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- The first tires are rolling out at a new Continental Tire plant in Sumter.

The Item of Sumter reports that the first test tires produced at the new facility were displayed on Friday.

Ground was broken in March 2012 at the new $500 million facility for Continental Tire, the North America arm of German-based Continental AG. Officials initially said the first tire should roll off the assembly line in 2014, with the plant completely built and fully operational in 2021.

The test tires were sent to Continental's German headquarters for testing. Full production is still slated for January. More than 250 employees are already working at the facility.
