More people applied for unemployment benefits last week, after two straight weeks of declines. New jobless benefit claims had fallen in four of the previous five weeks, raising hopes the job market was improving. But last week's increase to 457,000 returns claims to the level they have remained at all year.

Kentucky: Down 1,699, no reason given

Florida: Down 1,615, due to fewer layoffs in the construction, services and manufacturing industries

Indiana: Down 1,095, due to fewer layoffs in the auto industry

Alabama: Down 1,087, due to fewer layoffs in the service and furniture industries

States with the biggest increases:

California: Up 3,755, due to layoffs in forestry, fishing and agriculture

Illinois: Up 3,710, no reason given

Pennsylvania: Up 2,256, due to layoffs in the trade and service industries

Georgia: Up 1,593, due to layoffs in the trade and service industries

Michigan: Up 1,480, no reason given
