NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Another milestone has been reached in building a $750 million Boeing Co. aircraft assembly plant on the South Carolina coast.

Gov. Mark Sanford and about 800 construction workers were among those who turned out at the North Charleston plant Friday for a topping off ceremony.

The event marked the highest point of construction for the final assembly plant where the company's new 787 jetliner will be built. The final beam was signed by construction workers and a banner signed by Boeing employees was attached to it.

Construction began last November on the plant that is expected to be in operation next summer. The plant is the largest single industrial investment in South Carolina history.
