Tuscaloosa, Alabama — A technology company is laying off at least 100 people as it closes a factory near Tuscaloosa.
The Tuscaloosa News reports that Cinram Operations Inc. is shutting down its plant at Cottondale.
The company was formerly known as JVC America.
The factory most recently produced compact discs, which have lost popularity because of changing technology. The plant initially produced videotapes when it opened in the mid-1980s.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox says he and other leaders knew that changing business conditions were making it tough for the factory to remain open. He says leaders will now have to increase efforts to spur job growth in other sectors.
