Union Says Sparrows Point To Idle Tin Mill

Union officials say the owners of the Sparrows Point steel mill plan to temporarily idle the tin mill at the financially struggling plant.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Union officials say the owners of the Sparrows Point steel mill plan to temporarily idle the tin mill at the financially struggling plant.

The Baltimore Sun (http://bsun.md/A4qG88) reports Friday that United Steelworkers Union spokesman Anthony C. Montana attributed the shutdown to market conditions.

The plant is owned by RG Steel. Company spokeswoman Bette Kovach says RG doesn't comment on the scheduling of its units.

The company shut down its blast furnace just before Christmas and notified state officials it was laying off about 720 workers, but it restarted the blast furnace earlier this year after receiving financing from a New York hedge fund.

The company says its tin mill products are widely used in the container and beverage industries as well as for auto parts.
