PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) — Huntington Ingalls Industries says its Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received a $70 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy for LPD 27, the 11th amphibious transport dock of the USS San Antonio class.
The money will be used to buy materials and equipment for the ship, including main engines, diesel generators, electrical switchboards, deck equipment and fire extinguishing systems.
The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/AzCc29 ) the work will be performed at the company's Pascagoula plant. This is the fourth advance procurement contract for LPD 27. The first contract was awarded in October 2010.
The San Antonio-class ships are 684 feet long.
The ships can carry up to 800 troops and will support amphibious assault, special operations or expeditionary warfare missions.
