NAGOYA, Oct. 4 (Kyodo) — Toyota Motor Corp. has suspended operations at its plant in Durban, South Africa, since Monday afternoon, as workers there have been on strike, demanding higher wages, Toyota officials said Thursday.
The company is now under negotiations with the representatives of the labor union, the officials said.
The plant manufactures the Corolla car and Toyota's innovative international multipurpose vehicles, such as the Hilux pickup truck and Fortuner sport utility vehicle, and is an export base for Europe and South Africa's neighboring countries. The annual production reached around 150,000 units in 2011.
The officials decline to disclose the number of vehicles whose production has been lost as a result of the walkout.
