DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. has announced plans to close its plant in Dubuque next year, eliminating 350 jobs.

The company that makes equipment for industrial and laboratory use says in a news release on Tuesday that it plans to begin layoffs in January. The layoffs will continue in phases until the plant closes at the end of September 2010.

Work at the plant will be transferred to other Thermo Fisher plants in the United States.

The company says the decision to close the Dubuque plant is based on a review of current and project customer needs and the capacity of existing Thermo Fisher plants.
