COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) — Cummins Engine Co. will lay off more than 200 workers in Columbus.
Spokesman Mark Land said the company will idle off 195 workers at its fuel systems plant by Jan. 2 because of a decline in demand for heavy-duty truck engines.
Land says customers have been buying more trucks with older engines instead of buying new and more expensive trucks that meet new government emissions standards that take effect on Jan. 1.
He says 22 other workers who machine heavy-duty cylinder heads and blocks will take a voluntary temporary leave until sometime in the second quarter of 2010.
Cummins also will lay off 17 workers on a new light-duty diesel project.
Cummins earlier said it would lay off 400 workers at its Jamestown, N.Y., Engine Plant.
