BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Hyundai auto supplier Jay Mid-South says the Korean automaker is planning to move production from Montgomery to Georgia, triggering layoffs at the Gadsden company.
Jay Mid-South division manager Brent Taylor tells the Birmingham News in a Tuesday story that production of the Santa Fe will be done at the new Kia plant just across the Alabama state line.
Hyundai officials in Alabama have not confirmed the move. Jay Mid-South outlined the shift last week when it notified the state of Alabama about the impending layoffs.
The supplier employs about 135 people in Gadsden and makes seat frames for the Santa Fe and the Sonata sedan, both built by Hyundai in Montgomery.
It expects to temporarily lay off 75 workers in the wake of the Hyundai move. Taylor said the estimated start date for the layoffs is July 1.
