ERIE, Pa. (AP) — The union representing about 4,000 workers at the GE Transportation plant near Erie plan to discuss the company's plans to make the facility tobacco-free by next year.
General Electric Co. experimented in 2007 by offering $750 to workers who quit smoking and earlier this year discounted its health insurance premiums for workers who don't smoke.
The company's tobacco ban for all its facilities is scheduled to take effect by next March. GE Transportation spokesman Stephan Koller says the company won't impose the new rules without assistance, but didn't say exactly what form that assistance will take.
Officials with Local 506 of the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America plans to discuss its stance on the plan Thursday.
