SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Arizona-based company says it wants to open a wind turbine blade plant in Sioux City, which has recently suffered large layoffs.
Sioux City officials and TPI Composites say in state documents that the company wants to open a 250,000-square-foot factory that would employ 500 workers. The company expects to open the plant in June 2011 and hit full employment by December 2012.
TPI opened a blade factory in Newton, where it employs about 300 workers, in 2008. The company has pledged to hire 500 at the Newton facility, but has struggled with the recent recession.
The $38 million project would be located in the Southbridge Business Park.
Sioux City is seeking a $2.5 million forgivable loan from the Iowa Economic Development Board to help build a road leading to the project site.
