DETROIT (AP) — Hyundai Motor Co. will begin building the new Elantra compact at its factory in Montgomery, Ala., late this fall, the Korean automaker announced Monday.

The Elantra, previously built in South Korea, will be an all-new model introduced in showrooms early next year. It will make its U.S. debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Hyundai said that with the Elantra, along with its midsize Sonata and the Santa Fe small sport utility vehicle, it is building its three top U.S. sellers in the United States.

Santa Fe production was recently moved to a Kia plant in Georgia to free room for Sonata and Elantra production. Kia is a brand owned by Hyundai.

Hyundai sales are up 17 percent so far this year at 363,491.

The company has produced 1.2 million cars at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama since production began in May 2005.
