BALTIMORE (AP) — Construction is ready to begin on a new waste-to-energy plant proposed for the site of a former Baltimore chemical plant.
Energy Answers says it has received all key permits for development of the former FMC chemical plant site. FMC Corporation will continue to own the brownfield site and conduct monitoring and remediation. Company officials are scheduled to appear at a kickoff event Monday.
Critics at a May public hearing complained it was a glorified trash incinerator that would discourage recycling and spew pollution on surrounding neighborhoods. Company officials say the plant will create up to 400 construction jobs and 180 permanent jobs once the plant is completed in December 2013 while producing renewable energy.
