CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. (AP) — Officials blame grease that an organic food company is releasing into the sewer system for ruining equipment at an eastern Indiana town's treatment plant.
The Western Wayne Sewer District Board says the material from Really Cool Foods has been clogging pumps and damaging sewage equipment at the Cambridge City facility.
Board president Terry Patterson says the company needs a pre-treatment plant because its grease and cleaning products make it difficult to treat the sewage properly and it clogs the pumps. He says two large grease traps installed when the plant was built in 2008 aren't adequate.
The Palladium-Item reports that pre-treatment plants are estimated to cost between $2 million and $4 million.
Company spokesman Roger Harvey says it is working to determine a solution to the wastewater problems.
