HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — A former manager at a northwestern Indiana aluminum plant has pleaded guilty to charges that he knew about employees lying on reports in order to cover up air pollution violations.
Charles Woodworth of Crown Point made the plea Thursday in federal court in Hammond. Woodworth was the maintenance manager of Jupiter Aluminum Corp. in Hammond.
The plea agreement states that for five years starting in 2002 maintenance workers at the plant provided false information on reports to the Environmental Protection Agency. Federal agents raided the plant in 2007.
Jupiter vice president Mark Schoenfield tells The Times of Munster that the company hasn't been charged with wrongdoing. He says Jupiter regrets the violations and has taken steps to ensure they don't happen again.
Woodworth is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 1.
