NEWTON, Kan. (AP) — A Colorado company that has developed a new kind of wind energy turbine will build its first manufacturing plant in south-central Kansas.
Executives of New Millennium Wind Energy joined Gov. Sam Brownback and other officials in the city of Newton on Friday to announce the development.
The plant will be built in the Kansas Logistics Park. It's expected to have about 70 employees in the first year of operations, with plans to add about 300 more jobs over the following years.
New Millennium was founded three years ago to develop lightweight turbines for installation on the rooftops of commercial buildings, providing a direct source of electricity. CEO Drew Thacker says the Newton plant will build 35-by-28-foot turbines.
The plant is expected to begin operating by mid-2012.
