POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (AP) — A large southeast Missouri employer is cutting more than 200 jobs.

The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic (http://bit.ly/neW1pb ) reports that lawnmower maker Briggs & Stratton Corp. said Thursday it will lay off 202 workers at the Poplar Bluff plant starting Oct. 14. The company cited economic conditions and the seasonal nature of its business.

The layoff is expected to affect 92 seasonal workers and 110 full- and part-time employees. Plant manager Mark Melloy says the company hopes the economy improves and workers can be recalled.

Melloy says the plant will have more than 1,000 workers following the layoffs.
