COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Carbures LLC is putting its first American facility in South Carolina's Greenville County and creating at least 50 jobs over the next five years.

Officials announced Wednesday the maker of carbon fiber composite structures expects to invest $6.5 million on its new design and manufacturing facility. Construction on the 40,000-square-foot plant should begin soon with an opening date in spring 2012.

The Commerce Department says the plant is the first U.S. spinoff for the company based in Spain. It will design, engineer and produce carbon fiber structures for the defense, automotive and aerospace industries.

Carbures USA CEO Ivan Contreras says the plant is part of the company's global growth and expansion plans.

The company is recruiting for management and engineering jobs now. It plans to announce other hiring plans this fall.
