AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — A body shop will be added to Chrysler's Sterling Heights Assembly Plant as part of a $165 million investment.

Chrysler Group LLC says Tuesday in a release that the new body shop will add more than a million square feet to the plant and will build future products starting in 2013.

The company says it has invested nearly $3.5 billion in its domestic facilities over the past two years.

Last December, Chrysler announced it would invest nearly $850 million in a new paint shop for the plant. Some of that money also will be used at stamping facilities in Warren and Sterling Heights.

Chrysler's senior vice president and manufacturing chief Scott Garberding says the assembly plant was slated to close two years ago.

About 900 people work at the plant.
