NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a $3.4 million grant for re-employment and support services to about 850 laid-off workers at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. plant in Union City, Tenn.

The National Emergency Grant, announced Tuesday in Washington, was awarded to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The money is in conjunction with services the laid-off workers will receive as a result of their eligibility for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits.

Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said the workers will be better prepared for good jobs in Tennessee's growing industries by enhancing their skills using the grant.

A news release from the department said $1.3 million is being released initially. The rest will be made available as need is warranted.
