NC Goodyear Plant May Shut Down For A Week

The Goodyear tire plant in Fayetteville may shut down for a week in August to reduce its inventory in the slow economy.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The Goodyear tire plant in Fayetteville may shut down for a week in August to reduce its inventory in the slow economy.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the possibility Saturday.

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. spokesman Richard Evans says officials have discussed shutting down for a week if the market doesn't improve. Evans says layoffs are not part of the discussion.

The plant's 2,800 workers make about 35,000 tires daily. The plant is among the region's largest and highest-paying employers.

All workers except maintenance staff took off the week of June 30 through July 6 for a scheduled shutdown.

A labor union agreement in 2009 protected the Fayetteville plant from closure.
