SAO PAULO (AP) — The Brazilian subsidiary of General Motors Co. says production at its eight plants near Sao Paulo has resumed after a one-day shutdown was ordered because of fears of an unspecified job action by a local union.
GM spokesman Carlos Augusto Souza said Wednesday that production is normal and that talks are being held with union leaders about a planned action to halt production of four car models.
The Sao Jose dos Campos metalworkers union has said that it fears GM could announce the dismissal of close to 2,000 workers when it stops manufacturing the four models.
On Tuesday General Motors said it gave paid leave to its more than 7,000 employees to not expose them "to incitement and provocations," and to protect their "physical integrity.
