Food Company Fined After Nebraska Worker's Death

Regulators found five safety violations after a 23-year-old worker died earlier this year at Michael Foods Inc.'s operation in Wakefield.

Wakefield, Nebraska — Regulators found five safety violations after a 23-year-old worker died earlier this year at Michael Foods Inc.'s operation in Wakefield.

The Labor Department has proposed fining the Minnetonka, Minnesota, based food company $30,900 for violations found after the June 19 death.

The worker who died was taking samples inside a tanker truck that held egg products and nitrogen when he died.

Regulators say the company didn't take proper precautions for confined spaces and didn't properly train employees on hazards associated with nitrogen.

Company officials did not immediately respond to a message left Tuesday morning.

Michael Foods runs five chicken farms in Nebraska for egg production at the company's Wakefield plant. The company makes a variety of egg, potato and dairy products. Its brands include Papetti's, Crystal Farms and Simply Potatoes.
