TOKYO, March 14 (Kyodo) — Honda Motor Co. reported to the transport ministry Thursday it is recalling a total of 56,839 units of its Odyssey, Legend, Elysion and Step WGN passenger cars because of problems with the system designed to control vehicle stability.
Subject to the recall are the four models made between April 2004 and May 2006, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
A sensor for the stability assist system could malfunction, causing the brakes to be applied suddenly even when a driver does not press on the brake pedal.
The company had repaired the same defect after recalling 27,841 Odyssey minivans in July 2007 but issued an additional recall as a result of reexamination.
The ministry said 17 cases of braking problems have been reported since January 2008, but no accidents have been reported so far.
Also on Thursday, Honda Canada Inc. informed the ministry of a recall, due to the same system defect, of 179 units of the Acura MDX sport utility vehicle that have been exported to Japan.
The carmaker is recalling about 250,000 units globally due to the defect.
