KIRKWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York book manufacturer is closing its doors after nearly a century in business.
Vail-Ballou Press in Kirkwood will close in the next 90 days, eliminating 270 jobs.
Vail-Ballou's parent company, The Maple Press Co. of York, Pa., cited a significant decrease in manufacturing demand during the recession as the reason for the shutdown.
The company said the closing will leave its manufacturing and distribution facilities concentrated in York, Lebanon, and Mount Joy, Pa.
Vail-Ballou began operations in the Binghamton area in about 1910. Maple Press bought it in 1970. At its peak in the mid-1990s, the company employed nearly 650 full and part-time workers.
