RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Furniture maker Albany Industries is planning to establish its first Virginia operation in Galax, creating 335 jobs.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Wednesday that the company will invest $2.5 million for the project. Albany Industries will revitalize a vacant property that formerly served as the B.C. Vaughan manufacturing facility.

McDonnell called the deal tremendous news for the region that has been hard hit by recent economic troubles.

The Mississippi-based company founded in 1995 employs more than 450 people in a 500,000-square-foot manufacturing facility.

McDonnell approved a $300,000 grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund for the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $680,000 in funds for the project. The company also will receive state funding and services to support recruitment and training activities.
