MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) — A proposed air permit for a phosphate mining company's operation at a North Carolina port leaves no room for melting or storing sulfur.

The state Division of Air Quality has made its draft air quality permit for PCS Phosphate's operation at the state-owned port in Morehead City open for public review.

PCS had spent more than a year gathering approvals to build a processing facility to melt solid sulfur brought over on ships. A company spokeswoman says that plan has been dropped but a warehouse for dry sulfur pellets is an option for the future.

The plans were opposed by tourism and boating interests in nearby Beaufort.

The company has operated sulfur shipping and storage facilities at the Morehead City port since 1971.
