HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The number of deaths in the workplace decreased 30 percent in 2010.
The Montana Department of Labor and Industry says there were 36 worker fatalities in 2010 — down from 52 in 2010.
That is a big drop for Montana, which in 2009 held the dubious distinction for having the highest rate of worker deaths. A ranking of states for the most recent year was not yet available from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries.
Labor Commissioner Keith Kelly says the drop is good news but warns that workers and employers must remain focused on safety.
The state reports that transportation incidents remained the most frequent type fatality, followed by assault or other violence.
