SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — General Dynamics Corp. said Thursday that it has received a $56.4 million contract from the Department of Defense to make Rifleman and Manpack radios for the U.S. Army.
The contract calls for General Dynamics C4 Systems to produce 6,250 Rifleman and 100 Manpack radios, the company said. It includes start-up costs, accessories, training and related equipment and supplies.
Rifleman radios provide soldiers with communication capabilities similar to those available through commercial cellular networks, the company said.
"The Rifleman radio, enabled by the Soldier Radio Waveform, will be the first secure tactical radio to extend the network down to the individual soldier, significantly improving their safety and mission effectiveness," said Chris Brady, a vice president of General Dynamics C4 Systems.
General Dynamics and Thales Communications will manufacture the Rifleman radios while General Dynamics and Rockwell Collins will build the Manpack radios, which are two-channel radios that connect networks, the company said.
Shares of General Dynamics slipped 39 cents to $75.21 after hours. They added 97 cents to end regular trading Thursday at $75.60.
