ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) — A Detroit-area company that makes batteries for electric vehicles is celebrating its latest milestone with some high-profile people.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and some Michigan members of Congress have been invited to A123 Systems in Romulus on Monday. The company says it recently hired its 1,000th Michigan employee, thanks partly to a $249 million federal grant to make battery packs for electric vehicles.

Chu plans to tour the manufacturer with U.S. Sen. Carl Levin and U.S. Reps. Sander Levin and John Dingell, all Democrats.

Earlier Monday, Chu is scheduled to give a speech at a vehicle power workshop at NextEnergy in Detroit.
