BATH, Maine (AP) — Maine's Bath Iron Works has been awarded an extra ship, winning contracts for two out of three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to be built for the Navy.

For the contract, the Navy agreed to award one ship apiece to Bath Iron Works and to the Huntington Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi. The third ship was to be awarded on a competitive shootout, and the Navy said Monday that Bath won the competition.

Bath currently has contracts to build all three of the next-generation Zumwalt destroyers. Because the Zumwalts are so expensive, the Navy decided to go back to building Arleigh Burkes.

Bath and Huntington will be awarded $680 million apiece for the first two of the Burkes. Sen. Susan Collins says the third ship will bring Bath another $665 million.
