(Madison, WI & Edison, NJ) โ€“ On September 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. EST, IET Inspec and Automation Federation, along with support from Newark's element14 engineering community and Interpower will present an interactive webinar entitled; Great Minds on Innovation, Featuring Dean Kamen. Along with Kamen, the event will be moderated by Product Design & Developmentโ€™s editorial director, Jeff Reinke.

Kamen is perhaps best known for his role in founding FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) โ€“ an organization that challenges young people to get more involved in science and technology through various robotics competitions and numerous other related events and activities. However, Kamenโ€™s resume goes far beyond his role in FIRST. He also:

  • Holds several patents for medical devices that have played crucial roles in areas such as insulin delivery.
  • Has developed an inexpensive, portable water purification system that was featured in TIME magazine as one of the coolest inventions of the year.
  • Has worked, via FIRST, with companies such as General Electric, General Motors, BAE Systems, Xerox, Johnson & Johnson and Caterpillar.
  • Was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1997.
  • Received the National Medal of Technology in 2000 from President Clinton.
  • Was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2005.
  • Was awarded the Global Humanitarian Action Award by the United Nations in 2006.
  • Is currently involved in work ranging from Stirling engines to brain-controlled prosthetic limbs.

Simply put, when it comes to pushing the limits of product design through new and innovative thinking, this generationโ€™s best may very well be Dean Kamen. In addition to his presentation, those attending the on-line event will have a chance to submit questions to Kamen via this interactive format.
