INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Union workers are joining with environmentalists in calling on state lawmakers to pass legislation they say would bring new "green" manufacturing jobs to Indiana.
Members of the Blue Green Alliance held a news conference Tuesday at the Statehouse to urge state lawmakers to pass legislation requiring that the state get a certain percentage of its electricity from renewable sources.
The nationwide organization of labor unions and environmentalists says that would help create new manufacturing jobs for workers who would make parts for wind turbines, solar panels and other renewable power systems.
Steve Francis of the Hoosier Chapter of the Sierra Club says state lawmakers should also pass legislation making it more cost-effective for people to invest in renewable power. He says that would help "unleash" the state's green jobs potential.
