SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Salt Lake Valley Health Department is getting praise from its peers for its programs to keep food safe.

The department announced this week it won the 2012 Samuel J. Crumbine Consumer Protection Award for Excellence in Food Protection.

A panel of public and environmental health officials chooses the winner of the 56-year-old award each year.

Panel members say the Salt Lake Valley Health Department has an innovative food inspection program and a close relationship with the Utah academic community. Judges also say the department has reduced the number of serious food safety violations.

The award is sponsored by the Conference for Food Protection, a group that develops recommendations for making food safer. It's named after the late sanitarian and public health pioneer Dr. Samuel Crumbine.
