Wis. Livestock Operation Accused Of Overdosing Cows

A livestock producer in Shawano County has agreed to shut down until it can prove to federal authorities that its cows aren't being overdosed with antibiotics.

BONDUEL, Wis. (AP) — A livestock producer in Shawano County has agreed to shut down until it can prove to federal authorities that its cows aren't being overdosed with antibiotics.

The U.S. Justice Department says it has reached a tentative agreement with Dan Nolan Livestock LLC and its owner, Daniel W. Nolan. The agreement is awaiting approval from a judge.

Federal prosecutors filed a lawsuit last week against the Bonduel-based company. The criminal complaint says the company sold an animal for slaughter that contained excessive and illegal residues of antibiotic drugs in its edible tissues.

The complaint also accuses the defendants of introducing adulterated food into the nation's food supply, and failing to comply with labeling requirements.

A company employee who answered the phone Tuesday said Nolan wasn't immediately available, and hung up.
