PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Whole Foods Market in Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood has recalled a batch of pricey French cheese after a man became ill from listeria bacteria.
The recalled cheese was sold between May 20 and July 3 and was cut and wrapped at the store. The cheese in question is Jean Perrin Edel de Cleron which sells for about $25 a pound.
The Allegheny County Health Department says the 69-year-old man was hospitalized June 7 and continues to recover in a rehabilitation center from gastrointestinal problems linked to the cheese.
Health officials say the recall was only announced Thursday because it took a while to confirm the man's illness and then trace the source of it.
The store is offering refunds for the cheese and those handling it should wash their hands to avoid cross contaminating other foods.
